Chapter 11
I donât know what woke me up, but my eyes flew open. The moonlight was streaming in through the window into the room. The familiar comforter lay heavy against my chest. I glanced at the clock on the bedside table to find that most of the day was now lost. The glowing red light read 9 PM.
I hadnât forgotten what transpired hours earlier. It was settled against my chest like a hard rock, crushing my heart and stealing whatever hope and joy I thought Iâd found locating my sisters. I couldnât blame them for being angry with me. I knew theyâd never understand why Iâd kept the secret that our father was still alive. I guess in some respects I was being selfish. I wanted to hold on to the glimmer of hope. They were full of anger toward him, and it wouldâve been harder to convince them that my delusions were real.
Glowing colorful movement in the corner of the room caught my eye. Tess was sitting in the dark. She was juggling a magical bubble of goop from one hand to another as if it were a mere baseball.
âI hope you donât plan to hit me with that?â
Tess rose from her seat and crossed the room to the bed. âI should. I have every right. You hid a vital piece of information from us.â
âI know, and Iâm sorry. I didnât want you to have to grieve his loss twice in the event I couldnât save him.â
Tess sat down on the edge of the bed, and I eased myself to a sitting position.
âThat wasnât your decision to make. Georgia is angry. As you can imagine, knowing the reason behind her motherâs death opened a can of emotions that she wasnât ready to deal with. The fact that our father was responsible for giving the killer her motherâs name is a hard one to process.â
âI understand if she hates me, but thatâs not going to solve our problem.â
âI agree. Weâll solve it together like we were always meant to do. Why donât you freshen up and come downstairs and Iâll make you something to eat. Then you can tell us all about how you were contacting dad and everything you know. We can help you, Margo, but only if we know whatâs going on.â Tess rose from her spot and headed for the door.
I slipped my legs over the edge of the bed and stood. I grabbed the headboard as my wobbly, weak legs almost gave out. âHow did I get to my room?â
âAndrew carried you. It appears the two of you have a connection like we do. I knew something was wrong, even though I was across town on my way home.â
âI donât know why I passed out.â
âIt was because you used the magical tunnels three times today. What Auntie B forgot to tell us is that it zaps our personal energy.â
âThat would have been nice to know.â I headed into the bathroom and shut the door behind me. I turned on the faucet and met my reflection in the mirror.
